Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)

Bee Products

I have a small apiary that produces more than enough honey for my family to consume. Therefore, I'm happy to sell the surplus to local retailers and neighbours. Large 1 kg jars sell for $17, and small jars sell for $10.
I also produce my own "board butter," made from beeswax, which I use on all of my charcuterie boards and many other wood products for a natural and food-safe finish. All boards that I sell will include a supply of Hank's Board Butter to help keep the board looking its best for years to come.
If you're looking for a supply of pure beeswax, I will have some available as well. Please connect with me for details.
Below are eight important benefits of eating locally sourced, raw, unpasteurized honey.
Eating locally sourced honey offers several health benefits, including:
1. Allergy Relief
- Local honey contains trace amounts of pollen from nearby plants, which can help desensitize your body to allergens over time. This may reduce seasonal allergy symptoms.
2. Rich in Antioxidants
- Honey is packed with antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic acids, which combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
3. Supports Digestive Health
- Local honey has natural prebiotic properties that support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, aiding digestion.
4. Natural Energy Booster
- It provides quick, natural energy from its natural sugars, making it ideal for a pre- or post-workout snack.
5. Wound Healing and Antimicrobial Properties
- Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in promoting wound healing and soothing burns or skin irritation.
6. Cough Suppression
- Honey can soothe a sore throat and suppress coughs, especially when paired with warm water or herbal teas.
7. Local Support for Immune System
- Consuming honey from your area introduces your body to the local environmental elements, potentially bolstering immune defenses against local pathogens.
8. Lower Risk of Processed Additives
- Locally sourced honey is often raw and minimally processed, retaining more nutrients and enzymes compared to commercial honey.
Note:
While honey has many benefits, it should be consumed in moderation due to its high sugar content. It’s also not safe for infants under 1 year old because of the risk of botulism.
